Report: Giants unable to acquire Nats’ Abrams despite aggressive push
by Bryan Mcwilliam
#######
The San Francisco Giants made an aggressive push to acquire Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, but were unable to get a deal done, sources told The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly.
Abrams would have played second base for the Giants.
San Francisco was open to including the organization’s No. 2 prospect Josuar Gonzalez in a potential deal, according to Baggarly’s sources. Other players the Giants discussed with the Nationals included left-handers Carson Whisenhunt and Jacob Bresnahan, as well as outfielder Bo Davidson and shortstop Jhonny Level.
Abrams, who has some experience playing second in the minors and at the big-league level, would have joined a strong Giants infield that includes Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman.
The Giants reportedly had conversations with the St. Louis Cardinals about second baseman Brendan Donovan, and were involved in trade negotiations with the Miami Marlins for starter Edward Cabrera before he was dealt to the Chicago Cubs. Despite this, they’ve done very little this winter to improve their position player group.
They are now shifting their focus to free agency and have their sights set on outfielder Harrison Bader, Baggarly’s sources told him.
