The Athletics have secured their young cornerstone, signing All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson to a 7-year, $70 million contract extension that includes a club option for an eighth season, reports ESPN.

The 23-year-old Wilson, drafted sixth overall by the A’s in 2023 out of Grand Canyon University, has quickly emerged as a star. After a brief 2024 debut, he exploded in his first full season in 2025, batting .311 with 13 home runs, 63 RBIs, and an .800 OPS over 125 games.

Wilson’s elite contact skills — striking out just 39 times in 523 plate appearances — helped him top the AL batting average leaderboard for much of the year and earn a starting spot in the All-Star Game as the first fan-elected rookie shortstop to do so. He finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind teammate Nick Kurtz.

Son of former MLB shortstop Jack Wilson, Jacob blends exceptional bat-to-ball ability with surprising power and solid defense at a premium position.

The deal locks him up through 2032 (with the 2033 option), avoiding arbitration and aligning with the franchise’s rebuild amid their transition from Oakland to Sacramento (temporarily) and eventual move to Las Vegas in 2028.

This extension joins recent long-term deals for Brent Rooker, Lawrence Butler, and Tyler Soderstrom, building a potent young core around offensive talent as the A’s aim to contend in the coming years.
