The Minnesota Twins abruptly fired their team president just two weeks before the team is due to report to spring training.

The Twins announced Friday that Derek Falvey, who has led baseball operations since October 2016, is departing the team. In a statement, the Twins asserted that the two sides had “mutually agreed to part ways.”

“Over the past several weeks, Derek and I had thoughtful and candid conversations about leadership, structure, and the future of the club,” Twins executive chair Tom Pohlad said in his own statement. “We reached a shared understanding that the needs of the organization are evolving and that a leadership transition is the best way to move forward.”

The biggest shock of the decision is the timing. The Twins are highly unlikely to have wanted to make such a huge change this close to the start of the season, and suggests major upheaval behind the scenes.

Falvey’s Twins made the postseason four times on his watch, and won a playoff series by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2023 AL Wild Card series. Since then, things have gone downhill, and they culminated in one of the largest fire sales in recent memory at last year’s trade deadline.

Making things even stranger is the fact that Falvey led the Twins’ search for a new manager last October, which ended with a widely-criticized hire.

The Twins went 70-92 last season. Based on the chaos in the front office, there does not appear to be much reason for optimism that things are poised to improve anytime soon.
