A NYPD officer was arrested after he was accused of pulling a gun on a woman he solicited for sex in the Bronx after she refused to service him inside his car, cops said. Joel Perez Leonardo, 25, was charged with harassment, menacing, patronizing a person for prostitution, and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Bronx Criminal Court on Thursday. Leonardo was off-duty when he allegedly offered his victim $60 to perform oral sex on him as the two sat in his 2019 Mazda CX-5 near Tiffany St. and Viele Ave. in Hunts Point around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, cops said. When she refused, Leonardo grabbed a gun, pointed it at her and shouted, “Get the f—- out of my car,” according to prosecutors. The woman told a nearby police officer what happened. When the cop approached Leonardo, he appeared intoxicated, with “bloodshot, watery eyes and a pale face,” and told the officer, “I was at the bar. I had a few drinks,” according to a criminal complaint. He refused to take a breathalyzer. Records show Leonardo has been an NYPD officer since April 2025, most recently assigned to the 28th precinct in Central Harlem. A NYPD spokesperson confirmed he was suspended without pay following his arrest. His driver’s license and his permit to carry a firearm were also suspended. Leonardo was released without bail at his arraignment. His next court appearance is Jan. 7. — Baseball – Larry Brown Sports —  The Los Angeles Dodgers are parting ways with one of their longest-tenured coaches for a somewhat surprising reason. The Dodgers are not retaining hitting coach Aaron Bates, who has been in the organization for 12 years. The two sides could not come to an agreement on a multi-year contract, according to Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors.
It’s certainly unusual for a team to lose a coach they want to keep unless there is a better opportunity elsewhere. That does not appear to be the case here. Bates and the Dodgers seemingly saw his value differently and could not come to an agreement. One has to wonder if the Dodgers’ postseason struggles on offense impacted the organization’s view of him. The bats going cold were a significant reason the team exited in the NLCS to the eventual World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers. Bates joined the Dodgers’ minor league coaching staff in 2015. He became the team’s assistant hitting coach in 2019, and was promoted to co-hitting coach in 2023. He was with the team for both of their World Series titles in 2024 and 2025. Over more than a year and a half, Jacob Soall, 41, Sharon Hazan, 54, and Guy Sheetrit, 42, targeted thousands of companies across the world in their AI scheme, according to the indictment filed in a U.S. District Court in New York. Their victims included hospital systems in Missouri and California, a bank in Rhode Island, a financial technology company in the United Kingdom, a mutual fund company in Massachusetts and a pet food company in Florida, according to court documents. The defendants, from Spain, the UK, Israel and United Arab Emirates, were also charged with money laundering, according to the indictment. Lawyers for Soall and Sheetrit did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. It was not clear whether Hazan had an attorney. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to a voicemail left by The Associated Press. The three were arrested between June and September. In 2008, Hazan was convicted in a New York court of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The trio, who have nicknames that include “Rocky Balboa,” “Superman Cash” and “Fat Boy,” often targeted the companies’ accounting departments. They would send an email purporting to be from the CEO and ask for help with a confidential financial transaction, according to court documents. They would also coordinate a phone or video call where the defendants used AI to mimic the voice and sometimes the image of the CEO, according to the indictment. The defendants would then tell them to contact an attorney at a major law firm, who the group was also ready to impersonate, according to court documents. Soall mainly impersonated attorneys from the UK and had a “handwritten script titled ‘Lawyer Call’ that he utilized to make himself seem like a real attorney when speaking with and defrauding victims,” according to the U.S. attorney’s office. The impersonated attorney would tell the employee to wire large payments to bank accounts across the world, according to court documents. The funds were then converted into cryptocurrency to try to conceal where they came from and then distributed to the trio and others involved, according to court documents. FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. said the case shows how advanced technology can be used to commit large-scale fraud. “As criminals continue to weaponize emerging technologies, the FBI remains committed to rapidly adapting our capabilities to identify, investigate, and disrupt those who seek to harm New Yorkers and businesses operating in our communities,” he said in a statement. If convicted, each of the charges have a maximum sentence of 20 years, except for aggravated identity theft, which is two years, according to the attorney’s office. |
